Why My Teaching Is Different
Flamenco is often taught through choreography
You learn a sequence of steps
You practise it to music
And gradually you build a repertoire of dances
There's nothing wrong with that approach
But many dancers eventually notice something
Even after learning several dances, flamenco can still feel a little mysterious
You might wonder:
How did they know the singer was about to change the phrase?
How did that dancer know exactly when to enter?
How does everyone seem to understand what's happening in Bulerías?
These moments aren't magic
They come from understanding how flamenco works
Flamenco is a Conversation
At its heart, flamenco is a conversation between:
💃🏼  the dancer
🎤  the singer
🎸  the guitarist
The dancer isn't simply moving to the music
They are responding to it
Listening to the phrasing of the cante
Feeling where the compás sits
Recognising the structure of the palo
Once you start to see these pieces, the dance begins to feel very different
Instead of guessing, you begin to recognise what's happening
Learning the Structure Changes Everything
When dancers understand the structure of flamenco, several things happen:
✅ The music becomes easier to follow
✅ Improvisation feels less intimidating
✅ And those magical moments — where everything suddenly clicks — start to appear more often
This is the approach I focus on in my teaching
Not just learning steps
But understanding the rhythm, structure and singing that guide the dance
My goal as a teacher is simple:
To make complex flamenco concepts feel clear and approachable
Where This Learning Happens
Inside The Online Dance Studio, dancers explore these ideas in a structured and supportive environment
Together we study:
✅ compás and rhythm
✅ the structure of different palos
✅ listening to the cante
✅ improvisation within the form
Because when you understand how flamenco works, the dance opens up in a completely new way
One final thought...
Flamenco will always have a little mystery
That's part of its beauty
But the more you understand the music, the easier it becomes to step into the conversation 💃🏼🎸
