"What If I Never Really Get It?"

This is a question that has haunted many flamenco dancers:

Not the choreography. Not the technique.

 

The music. The compás.

 

The way experienced dancers always seem to know what's coming next while everyone else is trying to figure it out.

 

If you've ever felt that way, I'd like to share something with you.

I don't think the problem is that you lack rhythm.

I think you've simply never been shown what to listen for.

 

Many dancers spend years learning steps and routines.

 

They become very good at copying what they see. 

They learn to count.

They memorise.

 

And it's a skill that can be taught.

Once you begin hearing the signals that were already there, the music starts to make sense instead of feeling unpredictable.

Instead of wondering where you are, you begin hearing where you are.

 

Instead of relying on the dancer next to you, you start trusting your own ears.

 

You're no longer waiting for the music to catch you out.

 

You're recognising the patterns instead of trying to keep track of the counts.

 

There's a moment for me that never gets old.

 

The moment a dancer smiles at me and says,

 

That's why I created Hearing The 12.

Not to teach more choreography.

 

Not to overwhelm you with theory.

 

 

Because once you can hear the compás, flamenco becomes much more enjoyable.
