What If Rhythm Isn't Your Problem?

There's something I hear from flamenco dancers all the time...
"I think I just don't have rhythm."
Usually it's said with a little laugh.

But underneath it is something much more uncomfortable.

A feeling that everyone else somehow understands the music... and you don't.

That perhaps you're simply missing whatever musical gift everyone else seems to have.

The thing is...

I don't think that's true.
The problem usually isn't rhythm.
It's recognition.

Most dancers have spent years learning choreography.

They've counted.
They've memorised.
They've watched the people in front of them.

But very few have been shown what they're actually listening for.

So when someone says, "Just feel the compás," it feels about as helpful as telling someone to "just speak Spanish."

If you don't know the language yet, you can't hear the conversation.
Flamenco leaves clues.
The singer tells you things.
The guitar tells you things.
The rhythm tells you things.

They're constantly giving you information.

The challenge is recognising those signals.

Once you start hearing them, something wonderful happens.

The music stops feeling like one long stream of sound.

Instead,
→ you begin recognising landmarks
→ you know where you are
→ you know what's coming next.

And suddenly Bulerías feels far less intimidating.
That's why I created Hearing The 12.
Not because I think dancers need more counting.

And not because I believe anyone needs "better rhythm."

I created it because I wanted to explain one of the things that often gets skipped.

How to hear where you are.

Because once you can recognise what's happening, flamenco becomes much less mysterious.

If Bulerías has ever made you wonder whether you'll ever really understand it, Hearing The 12 was made for you.

I'd love to help you stop guessing and start recognising.

Hi, I'm Belinda
I help flamenco dancers understand how flamenco actually works.

Many dancers tell me after taking my lessons they suddenly think:

"Oh... now I understand what's happening."

That moment never gets old.

See here why my teaching is different.
