Counting the Compás Isn't the Same as Hearing It

One of the questions I often ask dancers is this:

Can you count the compás?

Most people answer yes (unless its their first class 😅).

 

Then I ask another question.

 

 

That's usually when people pause.

 

Because counting and hearing are not the same thing.

Counting is useful...

When we're first learning flamenco, counting gives us something solid to hold onto.

 

 

There's absolutely nothing wrong with counting.

 

In fact, it's often an important first step.

...but eventually it reaches its limit.

In a real class, the singer doesn't slow down while you count.

 

The guitarist doesn't wait for you to get to twelve.

 

And during Fin de Fiesta, no one is announcing when the next compás begins.

 

 

You need to be able to recognise where you are instead of calculating where you think you should be.

So what are experienced dancers listening for?

They're not usually reciting numbers in their heads.

 

Instead, they're recognising familiar sounds, accents and musical patterns.

 

It's a little like recognising a friend's voice.

 

You don't have to see their face before you know who's speaking - you simply recognise the sound of their voice.

 

The compás works in a surprisingly similar way.

 

Once you know what to listen for, you begin recognising it naturally instead of having to work it out.
