The 5 Flamenco Mistakes Almost Every Dancer Makes

(And why they're completely normal)
If you've been learning flamenco for a while and sometimes feel a little confused, I have good news
You're not doing anything wrong
In fact, most flamenco dancers go through exactly the same challenges at some point
👉🏼 Let's look at a few of the most common ones
  1. Learning Steps Before Understanding the Music
This is probably the most common experience in flamenco

You learn a choreography
You practise the steps
You dance it to music

But when the music changes, or the singer does something unexpected, things suddenly feel uncertain

That's because flamenco isn't just steps

It's a conversation with the music

Once you start understanding compás, structure and cante, everything begins to feel clearer
  2. Thinking You Need to Memorise Everything
Many dancers feel pressure to remember every step perfectly

But flamenco isn't about memorising endless choreography

The real skill is recognising what the music is doing so you can respond naturally

When dancers understand the structure of a baile, they no longer have to rely only on memory

They can listen and react
  3. Avoiding the Bulerías Circle
Almost every flamenco dancer has experienced this moment

A Bulerías starts...
A circle forms...
And suddenly you become very interested in tying your shoelaces
Or fixing your skirt
Or making an urgent phone call

You're not alone

Bulerías can feel intimidating until you understand how the structure of the palo works

Once that becomes clear, it turns into one of the most joyful dances in flamenco
  4. Ignoring the Cante
Flamenco is built around the singing

But many dancers focus only on the guitar or the rhythm

When you begin to listen to the cante, you start hearing important signals:
✅ Where phrases begin
✅ Where they resolve
✅ Where dancers respond

That's when the dance becomes much more expressive
  5. Thinking Everyone Else Understands It Better Than You
This one might surprise you

Many dancers assume that everyone else understands flamenco more clearly than they do

But the truth is that most dancers are quietly figuring it out step by step, just like you

The moment when things start to click is different for everyone

But it always begins with understanding how the music works
The Good News
All of these challenges are completely normal

And they all come from the same place:

Not being shown how flamenco actually works

Once dancers start learning about the rhythm, structure and singing that guide the dance, flamenco becomes much easier to follow — and much more enjoyable

That's exactly what we explore inside The Online Dance Studio, where dancers study flamenco from the inside out

If you've ever felt like you're learning steps...
but not quite understanding what's happening in the dance
You're not alone
Flamenco becomes much clearer when you begin to see how the music, singing, and movement fit together
That's what we work with inside The Online Dance Studio
A space where dancers learn to listen, recognise, and respond
— not just remember
A space where you can finally hear what's going on
— and know what to do with it
Hi, I'm Belinda
I teach flamenco in a way that helps dancers understand what they're doing and why, so they can dance with intention and enjoyment

Many dancers tell me after taking my lessons they suddenly think: "Oh... now I understand what's happening."

That moment never gets old
